Course Objectives (B2 advanced)
Upon completion of this course, participants will have further developed their Norwegian language skills to an advanced B2 level, enabling them to communicate with near fluency, spontaneity, and a high degree of accuracy in complex professional, academic, and societal contexts. They will be able to understand extended and sophisticated texts, interviews, and audio materials featuring nuanced arguments and abstract subject matter, including the separation of powers, the history of gender equality, the sustainability of the welfare state, cyberattacks, and sociocultural distinctions such as high culture versus popular culture. Participants will be able to discuss, analyse, and critically evaluate complex social issues in a balanced and well-reasoned manner. Topics may include different parenting philosophies, affirmative action in the workplace, ethical dilemmas surrounding freedom of expression, political cartoons and misinformation, as well as public health challenges related to substance abuse and mental health. In writing, participants will master advanced text genres and produce coherent, well-structured, and persuasive texts suitable for academic and professional contexts. These include analytical essays on controversial issues - such as wind farms, ultra-processed foods, workplace dress codes, and the use of robots in healthcare - as well as professional CVs, formal complaint letters to public authorities, and other purpose-specific documents. The course also develops participants' sociocultural and pragmatic competence through the study of Norwegian literary history, folklore, contemporary media, and advanced language use, including metaphors, similes, idiomatic expressions, and culturally specific concepts such as koselig and the distinctive characteristics of Norwegian leadership culture. To achieve the linguistic precision and accuracy required for the Norwegian Language Test at the B2 level, participants will refine their command of cohesion, punctuation, spelling, and advanced grammar. Particular emphasis is placed on complex adjective inflection, prefixes and suffixes, word formation, and syntactic analysis of sentence structure and parts of speech, enabling participants to communicate accurately and confidently in both spoken and written Norwegian.
