Social studies course

The social studies test, samfunnskunnskapsprøven, is a required step for many people applying for permanent residence in Norway. This course prepares you to actually understand and pass it, not just memorise answers.

What the social studies test covers

The test checks your understanding of how Norwegian society works day to day: the political system, work life, health and welfare, education, family life, and basic rights and duties as a resident.

It is a digital test with multiple choice questions, and it can be taken in several languages, which makes it accessible even before your Norwegian is strong.

Who needs to take this test

Most adults applying for permanent residence in Norway between certain ages need a documented pass on the social studies test, alongside other requirements set by UDI. Some people also take it as part of citizenship related processes.

• People preparing for citizenship related requirements
• Anyone who wants a clearer picture of how Norwegian society works

How the course prepares you

The course follows the official curriculum topics, using practice questions, structured reading, and explanations that connect abstract rules to everyday examples, so the material actually sticks.

You can study in Norwegian or in English, which is useful if your Norwegian is still developing but you need to pass the social studies test on a realistic timeline.

Combining social studies with language requirements

Permanent residence normally also requires documented oral Norwegian at A2 level or higher, in addition to the social studies test. This course focuses specifically on social studies, and pairs well with our A1-A2 Norwegian courses if you still need that language level.

NoTe (Norwegian Teaching AS) is approved by UDI and HK-dir. Always confirm the current official requirements directly with UDI, since individual situations can vary.
